The World Of Witches

Witches and witchcraft can be traced back to ancient Greek and Roman times. Skilled in sorcery and the magical powers, these witches manipulate natural and cosmic forces for fulfilling either good or evil purposes. They are involved in rituals, charms, spells, while invoking the spirits. Read on to get immersed in the world of witches.

The word “witches” originates from the old English terms known as Wicca, wicce and wiccian, which mean to work sorcery, bewitch. These famous monsters have always been feared and hated as they were thought to be vindictive, casting evil spells upon others and consorting with evil spirits. The western concept of witches and witchcraft has evolved from sorcery and magic beliefs, which date back to the ancient Assyrians, Greeks, Acadians, Babylonians, Hebrews and Romans. The ancient times in Greece and Rome have seen these witches become famous for their herbal knowledge, magical concoctions and mystic powers. There was a distinction made between "white" witchcraft (good) and "black" witchcraft (bad).

As the Christianity spread in the 4th century, witches and witchcraft became more and more linked with devil worship and looked upon as evil. Witchcraft was then practiced by pagans who worshipped pagan deities. This involvement led to hundreds of thousands of innocent men and women tortured and killed as witches over hundreds of years.

Today, the evil witches are the Halloween caricature as an ugly, wart-studded hag with an evil, toothless grin. Some of their supernatural powers include shape-shifting, flying, clairvoyance, invisibility, the ability to kill at a distance and astral projection.

There really were witches, but they had no supernatural powers in the conventional sense. Some of the well known withes from the past are Joan of Navarre, Mother Shipton,        Anne Boleyn, Caroline of Brunswick, the North Berwick and Tamsin Blight. The famous witches of the fictional world are Medea, Circe, the Three Witches from Macbeth and the Rosamund mistress.
